How to make a bar chart race from CSV data

A bar chart race shows rankings changing across periods. In VideoMason, use a CSV with a name column and one numeric column per period, or edit the starter ranking data in the Studio. Each period supplies the values that determine the next ranking.

Prepare one comparable series per row

Keep the same entity name across every period. If “Team A” becomes “A FC” halfway through the data, reconcile the names before making the animation. Every column should use the same unit and definition.

The bundled CSV example also accepts an optional colour column. A small invented dataset is enough to check your formatting before importing a larger table.

name,color,2023,2024,2025
Team A,#378ADD,40,55,72
Team B,#E24B4A,60,61,65
Team C,#5DCAA5,35,48,68

Create the race

  1. Open Bar chart race and load your CSV or replace the starter periods and values.
  2. Set a title that names the measure and period, such as “Team points, 2023 to 2025”.
  3. Keep value labels and units readable. Preview an overtake and check that the changing rank agrees with the input.
  4. Render the project in the size you will publish. Check the smallest labels on a phone before sharing a vertical version.

Handle missing data before animating

A missing observation does not necessarily mean zero. Decide whether to exclude an incomplete series, use a documented estimate, or restrict the time range. Do that in the source table and explain the decision to viewers.

For economic comparisons, check whether the data uses current prices, constant prices, totals or per-person values. Those measures answer different questions and should not share one ranking. The World Bank’s indicator metadata describes the definition of each series.

When another format works better

A race is useful when changing rank is the story. If the important result is the shape of a trend, an animated line chart makes it easier to compare the trajectory. For one current snapshot, a countdown or growing circles avoids implying movement over time.

Common questions

Can I make a football league race?

Yes. The football-data.org season race feed builds cumulative points from finished matches, matchweek by matchweek. It requires the operator to configure the provider key.

Does CSV import verify the facts?

No. It supplies the animation data. Check definitions, dates, missing values and source attribution before publishing.
