How to make economic data videos with FRED and World Bank data

Written and reviewed by the VideoMason team at TiG Talents in Germany UG (haftungsbeschränkt). Updated .

Use VideoMason’s Economic release format for a new reading, Yield curve for rates across maturities, and Economy over time for country comparisons. Supported FRED, World Bank, Eurostat and ECB connections bring official observations into editable video projects.

Import an official series

  1. Pick the economic connection and supported measure in the Studio.
  2. Choose the country or comparison group and period, where the feed provides those choices.
  3. Preview the imported values and their units. Confirm that the displayed date is the observation you intend to explain.
  4. Keep the source label and observation date in the project, then edit the narration and render.

Actual readings are different from forecasts

FRED publishes observed series; the supported import does not supply a consensus forecast. The Economic release project leaves that field empty. If you want to describe a beat or miss, supply a separately sourced forecast for the same measure and period.

Economic figures can be revised after first publication. Keep the retrieval and observation dates so viewers know which version you used. Reopening or refreshing a project can bring in a revised value.

Compare the same definition

Monthly and annual growth, current and constant currency, seasonally adjusted and unadjusted readings are different measures. Choose one definition for a comparison and keep it consistent.

World Bank indicators include country and measure metadata. Eurostat supplies the supported HICP inflation series; ECB supplies supported euro reference-rate observations. State the geography, unit and frequency in the video so a viewer can find the original series.

Common questions

Does World Bank data need an API key?

The supported World Bank connector works without a provider key. FRED requires a key configured by the operator.

Does a yield curve predict the date of a recession?

The video shows the yields and any inversion in the selected observations. It does not predict whether or when a recession will occur.
