How to turn Google Sheets data into a video

Written and reviewed by the VideoMason team at TiG Talents in Germany UG (haftungsbeschränkt). Updated .

VideoMason can turn Google Sheets rows into data cards and numeric columns into an animated time-series comparison. Enter the spreadsheet ID and range in the source picker, map the fields, preview the imported project, and render it.

Prepare a sheet the connector can read

The current connector uses an API key configured by the service operator. It reads sheets accessible to that key, normally a public or shared-read sheet. It does not sign into your private Google account or request OAuth access.

Use a separate sheet containing only the data you intend to publish. Share that sheet for reading as required; do not expose private business or personal data just to make a video. The Google Sheets documentation explains spreadsheet IDs, sheet tabs and A1 ranges.

Choose a table or a time series

For cards, use a row per entry with a name and a numeric value. An optional subtitle adds context. For a time series, place periods in the first column and numeric series in the following columns, with a header row.

PeriodSeries ASeries B
20234055
20245258
20256361

Import and check the mapping

  1. Open the data-source picker in the Studio and select Google Sheets.
  2. Paste the spreadsheet ID and an A1 range such as Sheet1!A:C.
  3. Select the row or time-series feed, map the intended columns, and preview the project.
  4. Check the values, units and title. Save the project, choose its visual style, and generate the video.

Refresh a saved project

The imported project retains its provider, range and field mapping. A supported scheduled project can refresh that recipe and skip rendering when the data content has not changed. Scheduling depends on the account plan.

A successful import says that the connector read the sheet. It does not verify the truth of the underlying numbers. Keep the sheet’s formulas and definitions auditable, and inspect a refreshed preview when the structure changes.

Common questions

Can I connect a private Google Sheet with my login?

The current connector uses a server API key and a sheet readable by that key. It does not offer Google OAuth sign-in for private sheets.

Can I make a bar chart race from a spreadsheet?

Yes, by exporting appropriately structured data as CSV and using Bar chart race. The direct Google Sheets feeds currently target data cards and time-series comparisons.
