How to make a timeline video from dates and milestones

Written and reviewed by the VideoMason team at TiG Talents in Germany UG (haftungsbeschränkt). Updated .

To make a timeline video, arrange your milestones in the order you want viewers to see them, add a date and short title for each, then choose the pace and export. VideoMason’s Timeline story format animates the sequence from those entries.

Choose the sequence before the style

A company history, a product launch and a historical explainer each need a different selection of events. Start with a single question: what change should the viewer understand by the end? Keep the events that explain that change.

Timeline story plays events in the order you enter them. A date is a label, so “Spring”, “1990” and “Today” are all usable. Put the entries in chronological order yourself; changing a label does not sort the story.

Build the video in the Studio

  1. Open Timeline story and replace the example with your own title and subtitle.
  2. Give each event a date, a brief title and a description. Add an image when it helps explain the event.
  3. Set seconds per event. Read the description aloud to check that viewers have enough time to understand it.
  4. Choose the visual style, preview the whole sequence, and render in landscape or vertical format.

Keep the history checkable

For a factual history, keep a source for each event in your working notes and include attribution in the video when appropriate. A publication date and an event date can be different; use the date that describes the event.

Use one main idea per event. If a description needs several sentences, split it into separate milestones or choose the documentary preset for a longer explanation.

Common questions

Can a timeline use months instead of years?

Yes. Event dates are editable text labels. Use years, months, full dates or short labels, and arrange the entries in the intended order.

Can I use my own pictures?

Yes. Add images you own or are allowed to publish, then preview how they crop in landscape and vertical layouts.
